The Squirming, Scarlet Madness Invades Amazon!

“I pledge my infinite spirit to speak the truth; may the Sleeping Gods strike me down should I lie… Yes, I understand the charges: Unlawful Necromancy and Abominable Parricide in breach of the King’s Law. I plead innocent due to the extraordinary circumstances. If it pleases the court, I should like to read a statement in my defense.”

A novelette of cosmic horror all the way from the Astral Diadem.

Rights to my novelette of cosmic horror, The Squirming, Scarlet Madness, reverted last year, allowing me to publish it as an independent author on Amazon. It is also available through the Society of Misfit Stories anthology, as detailed in this earlier post.

The story is in part unabashed Lovecraft pastiche, so if that’s not your cup of tea, no worries. I say “in part” with reason, as there are some differences between it and other Mythos-inspired tales. Among these is an Earth-like setting complete with automobiles, shotguns, and telephones—yet it isn’t Earth. As that might puzzle some, I’ll elaborate.

‘Popcorn Bargain’ Now Live

I’m excited to announce that my flash fiction ‘Popcorn Bargain’ mentioned in the last post is now live as an audio story on 600 Second Saga and can be enjoyed in iTunes and other fine podcasting venues, as well. A complete list of links is here:

The story is ably ready by Mariah Avix of  600 Second Saga. It’s a short listen so please enjoy, share, and subscribe on iTunes.

Popcorn Bargain on 600 Second Saga

I’m pleased to announce that a flash fiction story of mine has been selected to be read by Mariah Avix of 600 Second Saga and will go live this Friday. So be sure to check out the list of links below to listen to the story as soon as it goes live, this Friday, October 21st, at 4 PM PST / 7 PM EST.

The story is called ‘Popcorn Bargain’ and is a short, (hopefully) amusing piece with a theme quite fitting for Halloween. At less than a thousand words, it’s quite short too and as the title of the podcast suggests, listening takes less than ten minutes. I’ve heard a preview of Mariah’s reading too, and it’s great. So please give a listen when it launches!

The Squirming, Scarlet Madness, Part 2

I’m pleased to announce that my novelette, “The Squirming, Scarlet Madness” has now been published by The Society of Misfit Stories and is available on Amazon for purchase or through Kindle Unlimited.

Seventeen-year-old Glorianor Charlock doesn’t deny that she killed her father. But as her story unfolds before the court, the question becomes whether she is simply insane or was some terrifying, unknown force at work?

Here’s a description of the Society of Misfit Stories from the publisher:

These are stories often trapped in the forsaken shadowlands of the publishing industry: too long for traditional magazines and journals, but too short for print. The Society of Misfit Stories provides a loving home for longer short fiction. Each entry in the series is a stand-alone tale from talented new and established voices in a wide range of genres. Join us each week as we reveal a new story in the collection.

An upcoming scheduled of stories for the Society is available here.

Needless to say, I’m excited to have this story up and out in the world and am looking forward to sending more out there to join it. The main character in this story is projected as a supporting character in at least one future novel. More information about this story is available in a previous post.

The Squirming, Scarlet Madness

I’m happy to announce my novelette “The Squirming, Scarlet Madness” has been accepted by The Society of Misfit Stories and will be published October 7th. It’s my first paid sale in the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres!

The story is about 10,000 words and follows a young woman on trial for parricide in a closed religious community. The Lovecraftean theme is deep and deliberate, albeit with some twists. That said, it’s not set on Earth but a secondary, created world within a larger setting known as the Astral Diadem, the same universe used by almost all my stories. The subject matter is also darker than most, with murder, black magic, and cosmic entities.

SSM_smallThe story had its genesis as a project from  2014 and while it never panned out as a novel, I liked it in a shorter form. Due to its length (10,000 words) and genre (horror), it didn’t qualify for many short story markets, either pro or semi-pro. So it surprised me that it turns out to be the first of my current stories to be a paid sale, finding a home after only four submissions. A huge thank you to Julie Ann Dawson and Bards and Sages Publishing.

You can view the schedule of upcoming stories for the Society here. I will provide another post and link to it on Twitter when it’s available for sale.
